It’s widely believed that a satisfying VR experience requires a steady 90 frames per second, and that dropping even a single frame below that threshold could cause you to spew chunks. To find out if that’s really true, I decided to test it. For my control, I first used an AVA Direct

Intel's Atom chips are on their way out of mobile devices, and the next generation of the chip line will instead be targeted toward drones, self-driving cars, and IoT devices. The new Atom chips will retain the line's focus on low power consumption, with an emphasis on graphics and visual computing. The chip line, to be announced next week at Intel Developer Forum, will be used to maneuver cars, drones, and robots and to also help them recognize objects. Many Atom mobile and server chips have been on Intel's chopping block. The troubled chip's future now is in the growing markets of IoT and virtual reality.  The chips will integrate into devices with the company's 3D RealSense cameras, according to a

Let the whack-a-mole game begin. A mere two days after Thursday morning,

Setting up a smart-home system might not be simple, but this innovative device could make it a whole lot easier to use.

LG is making the upcoming V20 official, and hopes those with finely tuned ears will come running with cash in hand. That’s because one of the major differentiators for the latest LG flagship is a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC audio. This is supposed to provide “concert-like audio” and can “reduce up to 50 percent of ambient noise levels” according to the press release.  A leak of renders also reveal a second-screen ticker display, just like on last year’s model. On the back you’ll see a giant, dual-camera that takes up a sizable chunk of the back side. LG is also sticking with the fingerprint sensor on the back. Along with the audio claims,

The first thing we lose is the mainmast. Mere minutes ago, Bossa’s Luke Williams and I had set sail from our home island in a fairly large galleon—where “set sail” here means “flew into the skies, steampunk-esque engines propelling us into the no-man’s-land gap between us and the next floating island.” Now, our beautiful ship had been buffeted by a storm that stretched miles across the horizon. Lacking a mast, we nevertheless pressed on. Next to go was the compass, making it impossible to navigate through the storm. Then we lost the secondary mast. Then all of the guns broke off and were lost to the tempest. I couldn’t stop laughing. It was my first time laying hands on

Round two: fight! HP announced a refresh of its The latest Stream refresh includes an updated version of the classic 11.6-inch notebook and its “x360” convertible variant, as well the return of the 14-inch Stream. For the 2016-2017 lineup, HP is adding dual-antenna 802.11ac 2x2 Wi-Fi for better connectivity. The new Streams also have four color options (in select regions that we assume includes the U.S.), including blue, purple, white, and a black version for the x360 only.

A flaw in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) used by Linux since late 2012 poses a serious threat to internet users, whether or not they use Linux directly. That’s the key finding of a research study that’s scheduled to be presented Wednesday at the USENIX Security Symposium in Austin, Texas. The TCP weakness, identified by researchers from the University of California at Riverside, enables attackers to hijack users’ internet communications completely remotely. It could be used to launch targeted attacks that track users’ online activity, forcibly terminate a communication, hijack a conversation between hosts or degrade the privacy guarantee of anonymity networks such as Tor, the researchers said.

Twitter is not liable for providing material support to the Islamic State group, also referred to as the ISIS, by allowing its members to sign up and use accounts on its site, a federal judge in California ruled Wednesday. The lawsuit against Twitter filed by the familes of two victims of a terror attack in Jordan is similar to another filed by the father of a victim of the Paris attack in November

The free version of Hulu is dead, but the content lives on elsewhere.

Some city-funded broadband networks may be in trouble after a U.S. appeals court struck down Federal Communications Commission rules that prohibited states from restricting those projects. The FCC has no authority from Congress to prohibit state laws that limit municipal funding of broadband networks, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit said in a decision released Wednesday. In February 2015, the FCC

HP wants to add augmented reality to its Elite x3 smartphone, and it's looking at Microsoft's HoloLens as one way to do it. The Elite x3, which runs Windows 10 Mobile, was scheduled to ship last month starting at US$699.99 but has been delayed. HP believes the smartphone has the horsepower to be a PC in a pinch. It might also become an AR device that could be used in enterprises. Universal Windows applications made for the HoloLens AR headset will work on smartphones, and they could be used on the Elite x3, said Michael Park, vice president and general manager of mobility at HP. The Elite x3 won't do AR right out of the starting gate, but it will eventually, Park said.
