I have to admit this isn’t something I’ve thought about in a long time, but I peeked around and lo and behold Microsoft’s latest OS—Windows 10—is being offered in a 32-bit version. Microsoft says it has at least 71 million 32-bit users still (as of 2014), and didn’t want to leave them out in the cold, or thrust them into the open arms of Cupertino (headquarters of rival Apple). Given this situation, I figured I’d explain the main difference between the two. First of all, if you’re wondering which version of the OS you have, you can easily check by right-clicking the Start button in Windows 10 and selecting
Another day, another change to Facebook’s News Feed. The social network’s crusade against clickbait, the highly technical term for garbage articles with misleading headlines, continues apace with an That means you’ll see fewer stories like that in your News Feed. But hasn’t Facebok
Users who have Avast’s antimalware solution on a PC with Intel microprocessors are reporting Blue Screens of Death (BSODs) when installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Avast users report that when the AU process is kicked off, the PC will eventually crash with a “system thread exception not handled” error. The system then reverts to the previous version of Windows, forcing the user to re-download the update (if they hadn’t previously downloaded it to a USB stick) and begin the update process anew. I have a machine running Avast, and I had the same experience as others reported.

Lazy people will love Windows 10 and its ability to automate home tasks, and the operating system's smart-home credentials are getting a serious boost with a recent internet of things pact. Microsoft wants to put Windows 10 at the center of smart homes. The company wants users to be able to tell the operating system's Cortana voice assistant to switch on a light, open a door, release food for a cat, and even check the contents of a refrigerator. For Windows 10 to be successful, the OS will have to work with a wide range of smart home and IoT devices, and that goal has taken a big step forward thanks to a recent agreement between standards bodies the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) and the Thread Group. The two organizations will work together on improving interoperability between smart home and IoT devices.
Marc Tarabella wants to swipe left on Tinder’s privacy policy. The company’s terms of use breach European Union privacy laws, according to Tarabella, a member of the European Parliament. Tarabella particularly dislikes the way the company gives itself the right to swipe the personal information and photos of its users, and to continue using it even if they deactivate their accounts. It’s not just Tinder: Tarabella is also unhappy about how much personal information Runkeeper keeps about runners’ movements, even when the app is inactive. He has the same concerns about Happn, a sort of missed-connections dating service. The lawmaker wants the European Commission to root out abusive clauses in the terms of use of a number of mobile apps, and to penalize their developers.

If you couldn’t tell by looking at the front of the the Asus ZenPad Z8, Verizon Wireless has placed its exclusive claim to this tablet. Verizon sure loves putting its logo in places it’s hard to miss, like directly underneath the display. Forgoing overzealous logo placement, the Asus ZenPad Z8 carries a full retail price of $250 and carries a spec sheet that puts it in line with most mid-range Android tablets. After using a review sample for about a week, I’ve come to the conclusion the Z8 is a tablet I wouldn’t mind using on a daily basis. The Z8’s power and volume buttons have a clicky feel to them. The good kind of “click,” that is.
There's no such thing as too fast when you're crunching numbers on deadline in Excel. Any of these power tips will speed up your tasks. Did we miss an even better one? Let us know in the comments. If you and your colleagues share spreadsheets, it’s nice to have notes that explain what your formulas are doing (plus a copy of the formula). Some organizations even require it, especially if you’re a programmer or analyst. This little formula and the +N function are the quick answer to your spreadsheet documentation needs. Move your cursor to the column beside the formula column. If that column of cells has additional data in it, you can insert another column (which you can hide when you’re working or printing the spreadsheet), or you can create a separate “FORMULATEXT” matrix out to the side of your original spreadsheet.

Industrial facilities should be on guard against drones. Even off-the-shelf versions of the unmanned aircraft could be used to disrupt sensitive systems. On Wednesday, Jeff Melrose, a presenter at Black Hat 2016, showed how consumer drones could do more than just conduct aerial spying. The flying machines can also carry a transmitter to hack into a wireless keyboard or interfere with industrial controls, he said. It’s not enough to place a fence around a building to keep intruders out, according to Melrose, who is a principal tech specialist at Yokogawa, an industrial controls provider. These days, some consumer drones can travel up to 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) or more.
Ten months after Dropbox first Paper allows teams to work on documents together in the cloud. It makes it easy to add text, images, and embedded videos from YouTube, Google, or Dropbox itself. Users can also add programming code, which gets formatted automatically. And they can create to-do lists and assign tasks on those lists using the @ symbol. Since its debut in private beta, Paper has been used to create more than a million documents for tasks like brainstorming ideas and capturing meeting notes, Dropbox said. Based on lessons learned along the way, Dropbox has improved the software with better tables and image galleries, more powerful search, and notifications via desktop and mobile.
