HP’s PC group doesn’t want to be a “screwdriver” PC maker making look-alike laptops and desktops, and it is focusing heavily on design and new innovations as it prepares for a spin-off into a separate company. The company is focusing on cutting the plastic and adding metal and new colors to the chassis of its laptops and desktops. HP also is expanding its hardware options for consumers, businesses and gamers, and focusing on a future when virtual reality will be an important part of the computing experience. PC makers need to update the devices because customers are paying more attention to how devices look and function, said Mike Nash, vice president for consumer PC and solutions at HP’s Printing and Personal Systems Group.

On Tuesday, Microsoft outlined the Windows 10 versions you’ll know, love and buy when the new operating system launches this summer. But the company withheld key details, such as how it will eventually make money on it. As with Windows 7, 8, and now 10, Windows 10 will be sold in two versions for consumers: Windows 10 Pro, and Windows 10 Home. The Windows Phone brand, as Microsoft has indicated previously, is going away: It will be renamed Windows 10 Mobile, and will ship on phones

One year ago Mozilla crushed the hearts of open source fans everywhere by announcing future versions of Firefox would come with the ability to For users who just want to use Firefox, this means that soon you won’t need Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin to watch Netflix. Instead, Firefox 38 will use Adobe’s Content Decryption Module (CDM). Firefox 38 automatically downloads the CDM in the background shortly after you upgrade or do a fresh install of the browser.

Why not just use the Domino’s app or website, both of which let you quickly order your favorites and allow for greater customization? Is this basically just a PR stunt?

Pretty soon Amazon, Netflix, and hard drives packed with video files won't be your only options for watching 4K "Ultra HD" content. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BRDA) recently announced the specification for Ultra HD Blu-ray discs was complete. Licensing for the new spec is expected to take place this summer, with new Ultra HD discs and players to roll out after that. The BRDA did not say when we might see hardware and discs on store shelves, but a launch in time for the holidays is a good bet. Panasonic showed off a 4K Blu-ray player prototype at CES, and Hollywood has yet to meet a new disc format it didn't like.

Watermarks are, perhaps, the most reliable way to label and identify documents, especially for sensitive, private, or legal documentation because you can’t miss seeing a watermark. It’s splashed across the background of each page in a light shade of gray, unless you choose and create a custom watermark. Word provides 6 basic, pale-gray watermarks: “Confidential, Do Not Copy, Draft, Sample, ASAP, and Urgent,” in two orientations: horizontal and diagonal. These are adequate for most documents. To insert a preset watermark, select the Page Background group under the Design tab. Click the

Apple’s efforts to allow people to control household appliances from their iPhones through the company’s HomeKit framework are gaining momentum. Chip maker Broadcom announced Tuesday that the SDK for its WICED hardware platform, which allows manufacturers to build so-called smart devices that can connect to the Internet, is fully compliant with HomeKit. The HomeKit protocols from Apple allow manufacturers to create products that can be controlled from an iOS device. For example, if a smart lock was integrated with HomeKit, people could use an app on their iPhones or speak a command to Siri, Apple’s voice-controlled virtual assistant, to unlock a door. Using Siri to

You can do more than the default camera roll that ships with your phone, as these apps can mine hidden gems or handle backup to multiple cloud services at once.

You know toddlers: The more expensive and precious an object is, the more likely they’ll grab it. My 15-month-old daughter loves nothing better than to get her drooly little hands on my iPad—and when she does, she (naturally) skips the PBS Kids and Barney apps and makes a beeline for Safari and my Mail inbox. Great. Now, you could always get a baby-friendly case for your Android or iOS device, but be warned: They’re big, they’re bulky, and while they (typically) lock down the “home” and sleep keys, most 15-month-olds I know can pick the lock of a baby smartphone case in 10 seconds flat. Android and iOS devices both have parental controls, but you can’t just turn them on with the flick of a switch. It’ll take a few minutes to block web access, messaging, app purchases, and other grownup features—plus a few minutes more to turn them all back on again. That’s fine when it comes to permanently kid-proofing a hand-me-down phone or tablet, but not super-convenient if you’re dealing with your own device.

The word is out: Your SSD I kid, of course. The truth is, yes, under disastrously unfortunate environmental conditions (we’re talking Biblical), your SSD could lose data retention just a few days after it’s pulled from your PC. It could also lose it immediately if you pulverized it with a sledgehammer or threw it in a vat of sulphuric acid—almost-as-likely scenarios. To the point: I’ve re-tasked SSDs after a couple of years of sitting on the shelf, and annoyingly—I still had to secure-erase them to get rid of the old data.
