A tweak here and a tweak there. The mobile manufacturers are slowly honing in on better-looking Android Wear watches, and now the final, shipping version of the G Watch R has arrived in stainless-steel and leather flesh. I’ve been using LG’s Android Wear redux for the better half of a day, and I already think it wins first place in industrial design among the quartet of available Wear watches. No, not because the R’s aesthetics are sublime. LG’s second Android Wear watch looks nice, but it’s not transcendent. The G Watch R is the best-looking Android Wear watch precisely because, well, it’s the one that looks most like a watch. Notice the dials that reveal steps and altitude. This is the Hiking watch face.

New Apple iPads allow users to choose between data plans offered by different cellular carriers without having to obtain a separate SIM from each. But that’s only the beginning as embedded SIMs like the new Apple SIM have the potential to change the way all devices connect to cellular networks. The new iPad Air 2 may be thinner and faster than its predecessor, but the introduction of Apple’s own SIM card is the improvement users should be the happiest about. The so-called Apple SIM lets users choose from short-term plans from carriers in the U.S. and U.K. right on the cellular versions of the iPad Air 2 and mini 3. “So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you—with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip,” Apple said on its website.
Neil Young says he is making progress toward filling his online Pono store with millions of high-fidelity music files. There’s now more than 600,000 songs in the catalog for the Young, however, stopped short of providing details about when the tracks would be made available to the public. “We’re currently ingesting these tracks,” he said, speaking at the Salesforce
Despite the numerous rumors that told us the next Nexus phone would be a big huge phablet, we were still taken aback when Google officially pulled the curtain off of the Nexus 6. It’s a What is Google thinking? Is this Google’s way of jumping on the trend for ever-larger phones? Big phones are more popular than ever, but very few have 6-inch display. That's almost tablet territory! What's going on here? If you figured that Google thought to make a huge Nexus 6 to join in with the rest of the industry trends, you’re not too far off. The mobile market is gearing itself to appeal to those with bigger hands, so to speak. “Google and Motorola sized itself away from the general market toward a very specific segment of the market,” said Ramon Llamas, Research Manager at IDC. But it’s not

MasterCard is testing a contactless payment card with a built-in fingerprint reader that can authorize high-value payments without requiring the user to enter a PIN. It showed a prototype of the card in London on Friday along with Zwipe, the Norwegian company that developed the fingerprint recognition technology. The contactless payment card has an integrated fingerprint sensor and a secure data store for the cardholder’s biometric data, which is held only on the card and not in an external database, the companies said. The card also has an EMV chip, used in European payment cards instead of a magnetic stripe to increase payment security, and a MasterCard application to allow contactless payments.
Univision is looking to make every day The Spanish-language network giant revealed its plans to Univision is in a unique position because 76 percent of its viewers aged 18 to 49 watch only the network’s flagship channel, and nothing else. But as a broadcast channel, it’s available free to anyone with a TV antenna. The paid streaming service needs to offer enough value to viewers who otherwise don’t have to pay anything.
With Firefox Hello, Mozilla is trying to remove the proprietary shackles from online voice and video chat. The new service lets Firefox Beta users chat with anyone regardless of what browser the other person is using. As long as that browser supports Firefox users do get some extra benefits, though. In addition to being able to initiate calls, users who have Firefox accounts can contact each other with one click instead of having to share a callback link.

Chromebooks aren’t crummy anymore. Samsung’s new Chromebook 2, announced Friday, joins a growing cadre of Chromebooks that aspire to more than being cheap. They have powerful CPUs, interesting features, and in the Samsung Chromebook 2’s case, an extra-sturdy chassis so it won’t get beaten up on the playground. Nearly 1.4 million Samsung Chromebooks are deployed in U.S. schools, but these devices were designed for casual users, not rambunctious children. Samsung product manager David Ng admitted his company “needed to make the device more durable” for the education market. Aluminum reinforces the display panel, the corners of the chassis, and other vulnerable points. “Just try flexing the LED panel,” Ng dared me. I did: It’s quite stiff, though the thick bezel is ugly. Nevertheless, this level of build quality should help the device’s retail reputation as well.
