The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is taking its first major step toward opening up the skies for commercial drone use, allowing six TV and movie production companies to use drones to shoot video. Commercial flight of drones has been effectively banned by the FAA as it grapples with how to integrate drone traffic into controlled airspace while not compromising the safety of existing air traffic. But as the months have passed, it has come under increasing pressure from U.S. companies to make a ruling. Online retailer Amazon.com has been one of the most vocal, warning that it would take development of parcel-delivery drones overseas if the FAA doesn’t allow commercial use soon, and numerous other companies in the movie production, agriculture, environmental and energy industries have also been lobbying to allow their drones to fly.

Well, this isn't good. Akamai security researcher Stephane Chazelas has discovered a devastating flaw in the Unix Bash shell, leaving Linux machines, OS X machines, routers, older IoT devices, and more vulnerable to attack. "Shellshock," as it's been dubbed, allows attackers to run deep-level shell commands on your machine after exploiting the flaw, but the true danger here lies in just how
Samsung keeps raising the bar on storage capacity in its solid-state drives with a 3.2TB SSD, which is now in production. The SM1715 drive is Samsung’s highest-capacity SSD to date, and is built for reliability and durability, Samsung said in a statement. Samsung didn’t provide either a price or shipment date for the 3.2TB drive, but the company usually ships SSDs months after they go into production. Samsung’s previous highest-capacity SSD could store 1.6TB, but the SM1715, which is targeted at enterprise customers, will provide a speedier, power efficient and more reliable alternative. SSDs are used by enterprises in storage arrays or as cache in servers where data is temporarily stored when being processed. The SM1715 drive will plug into the PCI-Express 3.0 slot, as opposed to the SATA interface for hard drives and older SSDs.

Customers are the lifeblood of your business. That’s why you should take every opportunity to learn as much about them as you can - to understand who they are and what they want. Any time you’re providing support for customers - whether by phone, email, online chat, remote access, or any other method - is an ideal chance to engage them and collect valuable information. Here are four steps to use to gather information about your customers effectively, without getting in the way of providing the support they’re seeking. Setting up automated procedures to gather data from your customers can lead to an overwhelming amount of information. Devising a set of basic goals can help you develop tools and put together a dataset that will improve your support offerings. There’s something inherently scary about robots acting together to accomplish a goal. So-called swarm robots, which have recently emerged from robotics labs, have long been a staple of scary science-fiction films. But a new swarm robot group from Japan puts a distinctively “kawaii,” or cute, spin on the concept. Meet the Murata Cheerleading robots. They look like dolls, have glowing eyes and balance on steel balls. Unveiled Thursday in Tokyo by components maker Murata Manufacturing, each bot looks like a cartoonish girl sporting a red skirt and short black hair. A series of rollers under the skirt keep the robot balanced on a ball or rotate it in a particular direction to move around.
When the Surface Pro 3 launched, Microsoft made a bold claim: This is the tablet that can replace your laptop. Really? We set out to test Microsoft’s assertion for not just the Surface Pro 3, but for all tablets. We looked at more than 700 tablets and 2,000 laptops, digging into the specs that make a difference, like RAM and storage, display size, battery, and connectivity. Of course, for power users such as software developers, pro video editors, and serious gamers, there's still only one no-compromise mobile device: the laptop. Until tablets get more responsive keyboards and support fully featured applications, the physical specs don’t matter.
BlackBerry has officially announced pricing and availability details for its new Passport smartphone, which was previously unveiled and detailed through a variety of blog posts on the company’s I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the Passport before the announcement. The device is unlike any smartphone I’ve seen before. It’s big. It’s square. It has actual buttons—a lot of them. It’s kind of awkward. It’s definitely not for everybody.
