The skies have brightened slightly since March for the beleaguered PC, with sales now likely to fall by just 6 percent this year, according to research company IDC. A quarter ago, IDC had forecast a drop of 6.1 percent for worldwide sales of desktop and portable PCs in 2014. The good news since then has included some recovery in Western Europe and better-than-expected sales in other mature markets, IDC said. In addition, demand is falling for tablets, which often take the place of PCs, and buyers are still replacing older PCs that ran Windows XP. “The mature market activity is doing better, particularly when it comes to business purchases of PCs,” IDC analyst Jay Chou said.

Microsoft has added photo management features to OneDrive as it fights cloud storage rivals Dropbox, Apple, Google and Box for consumers and business customers by lowering prices and increasing capabilities. The new OneDrive features are designed to improve how the service handles photos in the Xbox One gaming console, Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones and the browser-based version of the product. For Xbox One customers, Microsoft is no longer requiring an Xbox Live Gold Subscription to get access to the OneDrive application. “This change will hit consoles soon as part of the June [software] update,” wrote Microsoft official Douglas Pearce in a

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"—the opening line to my new novel, Is it a hackneyed joke? Well then it'd fit in perfectly in the Tesla Effect universe. And, believe it or not, the silly humor is Have we reached a point in our society when we can acknowledge the benefits of unbridled dumb? Where I can stop feeling ashamed of my crippling karaoke habits or my love of awful B-movies? I sure hope so, because I want about a dozen more games like Tesla Effect

In a perfect world, editing your photos would be just as fun as snapping them. Corel’s newly-released AfterShot Pro 2 is an $80 image editor for shutterbugs and pro photographers that almost makes it so. AfterShot’s interface is clear and simple to use. If you’ve used either Adobe Lightroom or Picasa, Aftershot Pro 2 will feel familiar. For one thing, it’s just as fast as Picasa: Browsing a 236GB photo library is a snappy and responsive experience. It is significantly faster than Adobe Lightroom on the same machine.

You can stop complaining that all the world’s smartwatches are too ugly to actually wear. A new $80 smart accessory called Glance puts a small selection of smartwatch-like functions on a thin slab of hardware that slides underneath the band of your existing wristwatch. It doesn’t look like the most elegant solution in the world—I’m not sure if I’d like anything wedged underneath my watch band—but the price might be low enough to attract adventuresome, wearables-curious consumers. And while Glance doesn’t have a camera, or run apps, or provide Google Now updates, its small selection of features might just win some hearts and minds—perhaps a case of addition by subtraction in the feature-bloated wearable space.
