Enhanced features will soon be available to developers using Google's APIs.

When the folks at Aomei contacted me about reviewing their Partition Assistant partition manager once again, I was less than enthusiastic. It was, and remains, a fine utility, but it’s a rare user that requires anything more than the old version or Windows’ own Disk Manager and Diskpart utility. Then a bit on the PR blurb caught my eye—creating Windows To Go drives (portable Windows) from any version of Windows 8. Formerly, this was only possible with the Enterprise version. Game on. Partition Assistant comes in two flavors—Standard (free) and Pro ($49). The standard version has everything the average user needs: partition splitting, copying, resizing, creation, deletion, formatting, property changes (e.g., active to inactive), and even secure wiping. There are also helpful wizards for copying, resizing, converting from NTFS to FAT32 and vice versa, plus migrating to a new hard drive or SSD. The program creates bootable Windows PE (Pre-install Environment) discs as well.

Google is adding more features to Chromebook applications so that they can be used without accessing the Web, addressing a common complaint among users who want the laptops to function more like traditional PCs. Although Web use remains a central feature of Chromebooks, Google recently added the ability to edit videos and watch full movies offline, for instance. A shorter update cycle means that the company can be more responsive to user demand. “The platform has evolved and keeps improving,” said Caesar Sengupta, vice president of product management for Chromebooks at Google. “It is an OS that updates every six weeks. It keeps getting better.”

A three-fold increase in Microsoft Windows computers infected with malicious software in late 2013 came from an application that was for some time classified as harmless by security companies. The finding comes as part of Microsoft’s latest biannual Security Intelligence Report (SIR), released on Wednesday, which studies security issues encountered by more than 800 million computers using its security tools. In the third quarter of 2013, an average of 5.8 Windows computers out of every 1,000 were infected with malware, said Tim Rains, director of Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing division, which tracks security trends targeting the company’s widely used products. That jumped to about 17 computers per 1,000 for the last quarter of the year.

Samsung has made the second version of its Knox data and app security platform available worldwide, but only the new Galaxy S5 can take advantage of the improvements it offers for now. The popularity of Samsung’s smartphones has opened the door to the enterprise thanks to BYOD (bring-your-own-device) projects, but becoming enterprise-ready and earning the trust of IT departments is a long journey for the company. The Knox platform uses a security-enhanced version of Android, and creates an isolated “container” that separates work data and apps from personal data. Knox 2.0 is currently pre-installed on the Galaxy S5, and more devices will receive it via OS upgrades in the coming months, the company said without offering any details. To use Knox, IT departments first have to activate the functionality.
