Executives with three U.S. mobile carriers have voiced support for an effort in the U.S. Congress to encourage mobile carriers to offer services to customers that would render smartphones and tablets inoperable if they’re stolen. Executives with Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA and C Spire Wireless all said Wednesday they’re taking steps to offer kill switches on mobile devices they sell to consumers, although they stopped short of endorsing a bill that would require mobile carriers to offer kill switch services. Microsoft has again painted a grim picture for customers who remain on Windows XP and Office 2003 after it ends support for the old OS and suite in early April, but it’s unclear if the company is succeeding in its campaign to convince holdouts to upgrade. In a blog post on Wednesday, Microsoft reiterated that consumers and businesses that stick with the products past the April 8 deadline will face severe security risks and be unable to take advantage of technical advances. "Computers currently running Windows XP and Office 2003 won’t stop working on April 9, but over time security and performance will be affected,” reads the

Wacom has grand designs for a new graphical language that, it says, will allow input and sharing of writing movements across multiple platforms, with or without one of its trademark digital styluses. WILL, short for Wacom Ink Layer Language, will store pen strokes in a Stroke File Format and allow them to be streamed using its Stroke Messaging Format. The file formats capture not only coordinates and pressure, but also who made an ink stroke, and when, said Heidi Wang, Wacom’s senior global product manager for consumer products, at a news conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Wednesday. The Japanese company plans to offer WILL SDKs (software development kits) for capturing and rendering the file formats for major operating systems including iOS, Android, OS X and Windows—and even for Web browsers.
Did you ever have one of those days when cell coverage was so bad you wished you had a base station on your back? The Vodafone Foundation came out with just such a device this week, but not to keep irritable iPhone junkies happy. The Instant Network Mini, announced during the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, is a cell in a backpack that’s designed to let telecommunications relief workers swoop in to disaster areas and restore service as residents regroup. It weighs 11 kilograms and can be carried as hand luggage on commercial flights, according to the social-investment arm of U.K. carrier Vodafone. Non-technical staff can unpack the bag and set up the components to start service, the foundation said.
Chip vendors and device makers are readying the smartphones, hotspots and cars that will let users eventually enjoy higher download speeds with LTE-Advanced. New smartphones got most of the attention at Mobile World Congress. However, show visitors could also find displays of many technologies users will have to wait a little longer for, but in the end might enjoy more. One of these is LTE-Advanced, which consists of a number of different technologies designed to help improve performance, the most important of which is carrier aggregation. It allows networks to devote more resources to some users by treating two or more channels in the same or different frequency bands as if they were one.

Desktop who? Windows what? The classic Windows-based PC remains Intel’s bread and butter, but it’s needed to diversify its diet for a long time. At an event on Monday morning at Mobile World Congress, the company announced two new Atom chips, code-named Merrifield and Moorefield, that could be its first truly competitive mobile solutions. And not a product cycle too soon. In case you didn’t know how high the stakes were, Intel President Renee James laid it out in her remarks. “About 50 billion connected-computing somethings”—yes, that’s what she called them—“will be online by the year 2020.” Even a small slice of that pie would be pretty sweet. But competitors like Qualcomm and Samsung have enjoyed a long head start, so Intel has a lot to prove to prospective customers.
