An elaborate crop circle that appeared last week in a grain field in California was a stunt by chip-maker Nvidia. ”This is a confession,” said Jen Hsun Huang, CEO of Nvidia during a news conference in Las Vegas on Sunday, before he explained how his company came to create the circle in a field of barley near the town of Salinas. It was linked, he said, to his company’s . Huang had minutes earlier introduced the chip, which packs 192 cores—individual processing engines that handle complex mathematical calculations needed for 3-D modeling, simulations and computer gaming. Nvidia CEO Jen Hsun Huang confesses a California crop circle was a marketing stunt.

PCs from Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo will soon include Nuance’s Dragon Assistant, the speech giant’s technology for tweeting, Facebooking, and playing music using voice commands.  Nuance announced the partnerships here at CES, for both PCs and tablets running the Intel Core and Atom processors. Nuance executives don’t necessarily envision the technology being used at the office. Instead, Dragon Assistant will be constantly running on the new PCs, ready to answer questions such as “Who directed ?” ”Our objective working with Intel was to bring the PC into the era that tablets have been enjoying with the launch of [Apple’s] Siri over the past few years,” Matt Revis, the vice president and general manager of Dragon Devices for Nuance Communications said in an interview in advance of the show.  If a partnership between Nuance and various PC makers sounds familiar, well, it should. Nuance and Intel . What Nuance is announcing at CES 2014 is the “full realization” of the product,”  Revis said. But you won’t be able to buy Dragon Assistant as a standalone app or software package; it’s only available baked into the PC.

Makers of cable boxes and video streaming devices will soon have the option of delivering 4K video with STMicroelectronics’ new chips, which will decode the emerging HEVC video codec and support the HDMI 2.0 video delivery specification. The chip company announced that it was developing chips based on its new STi8K design, which is based on ARM’s 64-bit ARMv8-A architecture. The chips will assist in delivery of 4K video to TVs, mobile devices and computers through set-top boxes, home networks and the cloud, STMicroelectronics said. 4K, which is also called Ultra HD, is expected to be the new standard in high-definition. Most HDTVs and monitors are capable of high-definition resolutions of 1920 x 1080 pixels, but 4K provides four times the depth. 4K TVs, monitors and cameras are expected to be prominent at the International CES trade show in Las Vegas this week, which is where STMicroelectronics announced STi8K. The new chips based on STi8K, code-named Cannes, Monaco and Alicante, will be capable of video delivery at up to 60 frames per second, which is standard on the new 4K TVs. The chips based on STi8K are designed for cable boxes, Internet streaming devices and multimedia gateways in data centers.

in September, Toshiba has finally pulled back the curtain on its first ChromeOS-powered laptop, the aptly named Toshiba Chromebook. Curiously enough, Toshiba's laptop is the first Chromebook to ship with a 13-inch screen. While 13-inchers are all the rage on Macs and Windows PCs, most Chromebooks skew towards smaller, netbook-esque 10- and 11-inch screens. (The measures just shy of 13 inches.) The additional screen size also helps the Toshiba Chromebook squeeze in a full-sized keyboard, giving you a bit more room than its diminutive counterparts. That TruBrite TN (twisted nematic) display packs a bog-standard resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels, as one would expect of a budget-priced Chromebook. Unlike the display on , however, Toshiba's isn't a touchscreen. The 0.8-inch-thick machine weighs 3.3 lbs. and packs 2GB of RAM, an Intel "Haswell" Celeron processor, and a 16GB solid-state drive augmented by 100GB of free Google Drive storage—again, all standard for a Chromebook. Connectivity-wise, the Toshiba Chromebook packs a pair of speedy USB 3.0 ports, a full-sized HDMI port, a memory card reader, a security lock slot, and both Bluetooth and a 2x2 802.11n Wi-Fi.

France-based Parrot leapt into International CES with the Jumping Sumo, a robotic toy that you control over your home Wi-Fi network or a network created by the robot itself. All the while, the Sumo sends near real time video back to the controlling Android or iOS tablet or smartphone, as you’ll see in this video report from CES 2014. The Jumping Sumo can do 90 degree sharp turns or perform super fast spins. It can jump up 80 centimeters or about two-and-a-half feet. Look for Jumping Sumo to go on sale in 2014, though a price hasn’t been announced.

We live in a digital society, and our children need to become part of it. These days, it’s almost impossible to do homework without a word processor and an Internet connection. And scammers can find those immature minds. At some point, you need to give your child a computer. But you have to be careful. And I'm speaking as a techie who has raised three children to adulthood.

Imagination Technologies, which designs graphics chips used in the iPhone and other top mobile products, is promising “console quality graphics” with an updated GPU lineup announced on Monday. The company creates chip designs that it licenses to other firms for manufacture. It’s the same model as that used by ARM Holdings, but while ARM is known for its CPUs, Imagination is strongest in graphics. Imagination said its new PowerVR Series6XT GPU cores are up to 50 percent faster “clock for clock, cluster for cluster” than its Series6 predecessors. That should allow sharper video playback and more realistic graphics gaming. The architecture also supports so-called Ultra HD. Imagination also announced new GPU designs for entry-level devices. It said the PowerVR Series6XE cores will bring the latest graphics APIs to lower-priced devices for the first time, including OpenGL ES 3.0.
