The company’s sales topped expectations of $1.91 billion, based on projections of analysts as polled by Thomson Reuters. Revenue from advertising was $1.8 billion, up 66 percent from 2012’s third quarter, Facebook reported. Ads on mobile devices constituted roughly 49 percent of those sales, the company said. Profits were strong, too. Net income for the quarter was $425 million on earnings per share of $0.17, compared to a net loss of $59 million and a loss per share of $0.02 during the year-ago period.
We weren't expecting to like the Pixma MG7120 as much as we did, as we're predisposed against printers with high black ink costs. But the overall experience and print quality softened our stance. At $200 (as of 10/30/2013) it's about as good as you'll get in a photo-oriented MFP, but yes, we'd prefer pay a bit less per page for ink. The Pixma MG7120 has a beveled-edge design distinct to certain Canon printers of the last several years, and other design improvements that were introduced last year with its cousin, the . You control the printer using an upper front touch panel: A 3.5-inch touchscreen display contains most functions, with contextually lit buttons that show up as needed. It has a very short learning curve. You lift that panel to access the ink cartridges, instead of lifting up the entire scanner bed, as with most multifunctions. You can connect via Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB. Paper capacity is limited: 125 sheets of plain paper in the bottom cassette, and 20 sheets of 4-by-6-inch or 5-by-7-inch photo paper in the photo tray found directly above that. Flip over the photo tray, and you'll find the optical media tray, which inserts into a slot just above the output tray. The output tray itself is immediately above the paper trays and opens automatically when printing or copying. There's no automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning or copying multi-page documents, which isn't unusual for a home-oriented printer, but we like it when we see it. The is a like-priced competitor that has an ADF (and—ahem—cheaper ink). Next to the ouput tray, another front panel folds out to reveal three card slots: Secure Digital, Compact Flash, and Memory Stick. You may print via any of them as well as Wireless Pictbridge.

Web videoconferencing may get easier after a decision by Cisco Systems that should help bring widely used technology into browsers. to Firefox. H.264 is a standard for real-time video that is widely used by Cisco and other vendors. It hasn’t become a native part of the major browsers because it requires royalty payments to MPEG LA, which licenses the technology. In order to make H.264 available for browsers, Cisco will not pass on its licensing costs for the codec. Without a native codec in browsers that works with major videoconferencing platforms, users have had to download an application or plug-in before doing a video chat in a browser, said Nemertes Research analyst Irwin Lazar. That often means dealing with security settings that try to block new software, plus installing updates to the software over time.
that according to documents from NSA whistleblower and fugitive Edward Snowden, the organization is also spying on us through Google and Yahoo, without these companies' knowledge. As with any company or connected home, these two corporations have gateways to the outer, entirely public Internet. The NSA has successfully tapped into these links, providing them with a wealth of information that they did not yet have, including not just the metadata revealed in Snowden's initial disclosures, but actual content, such as text and video. The amount of information is staggering. A top-secret report from January 2013 states that this project, called MUSCULAR, acquires millions of records daily from Google and Yahoo. In one 30-day period ending in January, the NSA collected over 181 million new records from these secret sources. , the previously Snowden-disclosed program that gathered information on US citizens with the cooperation of Google, Yahoo, and other high-profile Internet companies such as Facebook and Microsoft.

A speedier successor to the ThinkPad Tablet 2 (shown above) is being developed by Lenovo as the company tries to add more tablets to the mix in its personal-computing portfolio. The next ThinkPad will be based on Intel Atom chips code-named Bay Trail, said Stephen Miller, a Lenovo spokesman. He did not provide a release date. The global enterprise software market expanded by 5.5 percent year over year during the first half of 2013 to $179 billion, a result that suggests a tentative rebound from economic turmoil in Europe, according to analyst firm IDC. Global software revenue ticked up 5.1 percent during the same period in 2012, IDC said Wednesday. For the full year 2013, IDC expects a 5.7 percent growth rate. “Enterprises are seeing new opportunities to drive new and improved products and services by leveraging information,” IDC senior vice president Henry Morris said in a statement. “Therefore, it stands to reason that software to manage, access, and share information (structured and unstructured) continues to be a priority for competing in today’s economy.” The analyst firm breaks the software market into three main segments: applications; application development and deployment; and systems infrastructure.

Let's start with the bad news: If you've purchased a Dell Latitude E6430u, there's a solid chance that it smells like cat pee. But don't worry! Dell says it's not actually cat pee and while the smell may be unpleasant, it won't make you sick. Buyers of the Latitude E6430u started stinking up the Dell forums with complaints about the notebook's suspiciously feline-like stench . Dell support first suggested removing the Latitude's keyboard and cleaning underneath, as well as blowing both the keyboard and vents with compressed air. Users said doing so didn't fix the problem, however, and over the months a growing chorus of complaints suggested the stink wasn't limited to just a few laptops. Some people reported exchanging their laptops only to be greeted by the smell once again in replacement Latitudes. Here's a mere whiff of the numerous gripes:

Google must be a very boring place to work. As usual, Google's engineers leap at and toying with to its users' experience. And Halloween is just that type of opportunity! Taiwan is demanding Apple revise its mapping software and remove a label that describes the island as a province of China, rather than as a sovereign state. Taiwan's foreign ministry made the complaint to Apple, said an official on Wednesday. "The maps don't acknowledge Taiwan as its own nation. We voiced our disapproval, and hope Apple will make the change," she said. The complaint was lodged after local media reports said that users on the island had noticed the change in Apple's latest iOS and Mac OS versions. When searched, Taiwan is listed as "" on the maps. The foreign ministry learned of it, and contacted the company. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
